Oh my oh my….it’s been quite a while. I feel horrible for not posting in such a long time, but life has been happening, and it is happening in a good way. Let’s change this Mundane Monday into a Motivating Monday, shall we?
This Tuesday Tutorial is all about Valentine’s Day coming up. What better way to show someone you love, or show yourself some love, by making a heart charm. This little charm can be placed on a necklace, a key chain, or one of my favorites, my dog’s collar. These were really fun to make and you don’t need to have an arsenal of artist media such as acrylic paints, nifty paintbrushes, or a degree in clay modeling.
Here’s What You Need:
2. Lots of Nail Polish
3. Preferably something to make a Heart form out of. I used a Tablespoon measurement.
4. Something to make a hole in your Clay Heart. I used these little Key Rings from Target.
5. Rhinestones, Sequins, any sort of Bling you may want to add.
Knead your clay so that it becomes very soft and pliable. This will make it much easier for you form it even if you are using a cookie cutter or any other type of form. It will make blending out any flaws much less difficult.
Poke holes in your hearts. Some of them I placed the holes in the center and others in the top corner. It’s just preference. Be sure to make your holes big enough for a chain or key ring to go through, but be careful not to distort the shape of your heart while doing so.
Bake your hearts at 275 degrees for 15 minutes and then let them cool for about another 15 minutes. These get hot!!!
Get out your nail polish and go crazy! I love how candy coated they look with the nail polish, rather than a more dull tone with a true acrylic paint. You will have to do at least two coats of paint due to the clay absorbing the paint. The drying time in between coats is very fast though! The back side of my hearts are not painted because I plan on writing a little word or note just for the person (or dog) I give it to.
Adorn your hearts with rhinestones or anything else to top it off! Most of all, have fun with it!!
Fingernails are THE fashion accessory right now. Whether you are topping them with “caviar”, edging them with sparkle, or painting them fluorescent, your fingernails can be your statement piece for any occasion. The options are endless and there are many resources for you to use in order to give yourself a DIY manicure that goes well beyond applying two coats of polish. Polka Dot Tango has collected some inspiration for you to take a look at, going from extreme harajuku nails to simply stated. There is a look for everyone and that’s what makes this fashion trend so fun and possible! Let us know what fashion you like to show on your fingernails! You can tweet us @polkadottango, let us know on Facebook, or leave a comment below!
Caviar Nails are one of the newer trends out there. Customer reviews stated that these manicures are tons of fun for not so much a ton of time….if you catch my drift. Also, rumor is that you can create this look by getting a little creative using products from your local craft store. Here’s a wonderful tutorial I found on creating this same effect on YouTube.
Glitter, Glitter, GLITTER!!!! So thankful that I have a reason to keep glitter in my adult life. Glitter nail polish is the easiest way to dress up your nails and make them look fabulous without having the talent of a professional manicurist. What’s even better is that if you feel that having glitter on all of your fingernails is too much, now it is acceptable to only paint one of your nails to the max with glitter and such. See photo directly below.
Matte nail polish is H…O…T… right now. It really gives your nails drama and sophistication and having matte nail polish alone will make an impact. Here’s another rumor for you: If you don’t want to spend money on matte nail polish, a little birdie told me you can add just a bit of cornstarch to your top coat, mix it in, paint and PRESTO!!! You have matte nails! Now how cool are you?
Pointed nails are a hit right now, but I have noticed that only the brave (or ferocious) have the courage to rock them. They definitely give the wearer a fiercer look and for some reason, the more muted ones seem very mature to me. Maybe this style kind of reminds me of women in the 80’s who were magazine editors or villians who had power.
Patterns, pansies, and prints oh my! I’m not too sure how many people have the steady hand, the eye site, or the patience for these lovely nails, but more power to those that do! How much fun they are! Now that Sally Hansen has come out with the press on nail polish, designs like these are a little more realistic to the average nail polisher.
Really, the possibilities are endless with what you can paint onto your fingernails! Don’t forget about these types of nail polishes that can make your DIY manicure go from eh to ahhhhhh: Crackle, Opalescent, Magnetic, Gel Strips, Metallic, Fluorescent, and more! So, to tie things off with the post, Polka Dot Tango would like to leave you with some of the most amazing nail trends we could find. These images just go to show you that painting your nails is a true art form. :}
2012 is gone and it’s time to move on. Obviously, I can not speak for everyone, but 2013 seems like it’s going to be a fabulous year! When I look back on last year, I can’t help but think of the tragedies and disasters that occurred, and how they affected the entire world. Fortunately, for many, there were glimmers of success, joyous occasions, and just plain old good days that helped to keep the world turning on a positive note. Here is what Maya Angelou had to say about last year and moving on to this year:
“In 2012 nature and the mad nature of some human beings caused us to wonder how can we go on. From super storm Sandy to the Colorado movie house shooting and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we have been pressed to find some answers to the question, why, me why us, why now? As we come into 2013, we bring with us the need to find answers and the hope to find what can we do to prevent the recurrence of these despairing occurrences. I think we must commit to a commitment to all human beings and a decision to accept our responsibility to nature’s outpouring and human misbehavior. I wish that we could say with Horace Mann that each of us should be “ashamed to die until you have won some victory for mankind.” I think we must surrender the despair of unexpected cruelty and extend the wonder of unexpected kindnesses to ourselves and to each other. 2013 can bring us the chance to be kind to each other and kind to ourselves. We deserve each other and each others generosity.”
This year, let’s be light on our hearts and give out smiles like they are on the brink of extinction!! It’s not Monday, but let’s get some new year motivation going anyway!!!!

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
– Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl books have always made me smile. He was the author who ultimately ruled my book shelves with an iron fist. Growing up I gave away all of my books, but his. I should probably give him credit for helping to create this vivid imagination I carry with me. Just the thought of “The Witches” or “The Twits” make me want to get up in that attic and read every book of his all over again.
“Boooooooooop, Boooooooooop. Do you know what that sound is? That’s the sound of the ambulance coming to take me away cause the sight of you stopped my heart.”
A Night at the Roxbury is my number one movie. Yes, it has probably the most horrible reviews and yes a lot of people change their opinion of me when they hear it’s my favorite. I can’t help that I fall in love with these two characters who have a very passionate dream and in the end, they actually achieve it. This movie has some great morals: don’t be with someone who doesn’t make you happy, keep going after your goals, have fun, and stay true to your dance moves!
Be grateful, Juan Pablo. Today is especially delicious.
I. LOVE. NACHOS. Nachos can pretty much be made out of anything so they can suit any type of mood you are in. My husband doesn’t realize that I could eat nachos everyday for dinner, but I can. One of my goals is to actually come out with a recipe book on how to make many different types of nachos so that everyone can enjoy them!
Vintage Prints are what I look for in yard sales. Everything from the smell, to the type of paper being used, or the method of printing. I recently found a pair of two ads for a printing company dated back in the early 1900’s which are of course a wonderful addition to my office! If you ever find some pieces, let me know! 😉
Tell us what makes you smile and we can post it on next Monday’s blog!
This Things To Do Thursday is to Free Yourself! I don’t mean by taking off your bra, but if you are into that…More Power To You :)! The meaning I have behind this is to let your mind and inhibitions go for just a while. You don’t have to run out and get a tattoo or quit your day job, but to do just one thing just one day a week that makes you feel completely free. I am sure many people have so many different meanings of what this means. For me it can mean taking some time to doodle anything without having a plan or wearing that one article of clothing that has been hanging in your closet because it’s for a “special occasion” or you’re not sure if you can “pull it off”. All Polka Dot Tango is asking One Hour, One Day A Week. Below is a list of some simple ideas that may help you out with this task and I hope it helps or conjures up new ideas of your own!
Doodle with absolutely no idea what the final piece is going to look like.
Grab that article of clothing you have been dying to wear the last month or year and wear it! To work, to dinner, to bowling, wherever works.
Think of nothing. Really, nothing at all. Close your eyes, listen to what’s around you and your breathing, and don’t rush yourself.
Blow bubbles. I keep a bottle of bubbles in my car. True story.
Sing really really loud. Cracks, loss of voice, off key are all highly recommended if you are not blessed with the voice of an angel.
Say what’s on your mind knowing it will not kill you. It works miracles and you will get the greatest facial expressions back.
If you walk or run, do a cartwheel. If you don’t know how to do a cartwheel, throw up some rock on hand signs just because you’re awesome.
If you see a pretty flower, pick it and wear it in your hair.
Dance all the time.
Accept yourself and those around you. Do it peacefully and graciously.
These are just my ideas and of course everyone is different. I hope that this inspires you and let Polka Dot Tango know what you did to Free Yourself!
Hello all and welcome to the beginning of the work week. This weekend was filled with birthday parties, cool breezes in warm weather, and some much needed face time with the family. This morning I came across a great tumblr at observando.net. There are many beautiful images and words for you to look at, so many that when I got to page 56 I realized that I needed to get back to work. Anywho, hope you enjoy these inspirational words and fantastic imagery on this Monday.
Applying for a new job can be quite stressful especially with the job market being as competitive as it is today. So many people are in need of a job that you may be 1 in 100 sending in your resume for a job position that just opened. When this is the case, your resume must make a great first impression. Employers typically scan over each resume for a few seconds and if they don’t see what they are looking for, it’ll be placed aside, so having a resume that stands out is extremely important. Your resume shouldn’t be the same for each job position you apply for. It’s important to tailor for each specific company/position you are applying for. I had the opportunity to apply for a job as “Design Studio Coordinator” where the position was coordinating the craft designers and photographers, so I took the time to make a creative resume for the position. It took a lot of time and effort but it all paid off.
Sorry that the photos do it no justice. I’ll replace them when I get the hang of my camera. =/
